What informed consent really means
Informed consent is a conversation that continues for as long as you are in a study — not a form you sign once. Here is what it is really about.
It is a process, not a form
The form is only a record that the conversation happened. The real thing is the understanding you build with the team — before you decide, and all the way through the study.
It should be in a language you understand
The team should explain everything in plain words, in a language you are comfortable with. If a word is confusing, that is a sign to ask, not a sign that something is wrong with you.
Consent can be given again and again
If something important changes during the study, the team should tell you and ask again whether you still want to take part. Your understanding is meant to stay up to date, not be frozen at the start.
